The quote that always gets stuck in my head around this time of year is from Dazed And Confused (1993) : "Okay guys, one more thing, this summer when you're being inundated with all this American bicentennial Fourth Of July brouhaha, don't forget what you're celebrating, and that's the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn't want to pay their taxes." But that's not what I came here to tell you about... Welcome to This Week In Film where we crea

June 21, 2021 - June 27, 2021 In the span of one week we saw 3 classics prior to the Chattanooga Film Festival, then 14 festival features, and 5 virtual events. The virtual events included The Nights That Panicked America, Barkett The Moon, Transgressions For Everyone!, Fangoria Presents Mental Health and Horror, Welcome to the Final Girl Support Group, and One Man Show the music and madness of Nick Latsko. And then all the coverage for said films and events. It's been a long road but I love the idea of virtual film festivals. It looks as though, fests may be held as hybrid events in the future with a virtual component. Could you imagine that one day, some schmuck from Chicago with a weekly blog could write coverage for Cannes? Yeah, me neither. But that's not what I came here to tell you about... This Week In Film where I create a weekly rundown of the random sh*t I watch. There’s a HIGH / LOW at the end of this entry, so if words aren't really your thing, you can scroll q

June 14, 2021 - June 20, 2021 Hello readers. For the last week we've been entertaining Katie's mom and niece. It was a six year old's first trip to... well anywhere without her mommy. She was a little homesick after the first night, but then she got to see Chicago. I love it when newbies to the city come into town. It gives you a chance to do all those over-priced and over-hyped tourist things you never want to do. We went to Navy Pier and took a boat tour. We rode the centennial wheel, shopped the shops in Water Tower, visited Cloud Gate (The Bean), the American Writers Museum, Lincoln Park Zoo, visited Wicker Park, Lincoln Square, ate hot dogs and deep dish pizza, and walked a lot. After all the tourism, it was riding the L through the loop that really captured the city. That moment right after you depart from Merchandise Mart and you're over the river... That's the city. That's Chicago's beauty. Skyscrapers along the river as far as the eye can see. Even

May 31, 2021 - June 13, 2021 Hello readers. There is something I can’t get out of my head. I know nothing of the New Mexico Sheriff trying to run for Mayor of Albuquerque. I don’t know his policies or anything about him personally. What I do know is that last Tuesday, during his speech on being tough on crime, a drone came toward him. This was no ordinary drone. A run-of-the-mill drone would have been terrifying or maybe it could have been part of recording the size of the crowd in attendance. No, this drone had a giant dildo attached to it. When I first read the headline, I thought about the dildo being made of firm plastic more like a vibrator and attached horizontally. I imagined it chasing the sheriff's mouth. Then I saw there was video of said dildo drone. It was even funnier than I imagined. It was a large jiggling penis hanging vertically from the drone. It was shaking in the air, eager to greet the Mayoral candidate. Nothing this last two weeks can top that image. Nothing

May 24, 2021 - May 30, 2021 Hello readers. You ever have one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it weeks? I've been keeping a bullet journal for 6 years. I've listed every movie, TV show, concert, headache, intimate event, and every work-related item. The idea is that you can keep track of the progression of your life. Know where your time is going. Plan your time in advance in some cases. But you can look through these journals and see time compressed into pages rather than hours. A year is quick flip. You get really upset, but remind yourself that time passes. It is out of your control. You choose how to fill your time, but eventually it will be a few pictures in your phone. If you're lucky certain moments will pop back into your memory and give you joy again and again. Other moments will fill you with deep remorse and flood you with sadness. But these times too will pass. But that's not what I came here to tell you about... This Week In Film where I create a weekly

May 17, 2021 - May 23, 2021 Hello readers. We held out as long as we could. Chicago weather went from sweaters to tank tops in less than a week. We thought we were doing the right thing. Our little weather station said it was 84 degrees inside the house. We can suffer. It's cool to suffer. Then we secretly did some reconnaissance by asking co-workers and close friends about their AC situation. Every one of them agreed they turned it on the moment it hit the mid-seventies. If all your friends are turning on the AC, you should to, right? The final straw was when we went to see Candyman at the Music Box. We finally got to see our closest friends and share a movie with them for the first time since the pandemic started. It was glorious. We had empanadas, booze, M&M's, a little pot, some fountain coke, and enjoyed a night out. When they told us they've been sleeping at a nice cold 68 degrees, Katie and I shared a look as to say, "We are so turning it on when we get hom

May 10, 2021 - May 16, 2021 Hello readers. What a confusing week? The CDC is telling people that if they are vaccinated they can be outside or inside uncrowded places without a mask. This news was taken as: Woo Hoo Open F*ckin' Season Folks! It's safe to say that some are worried that people may - as strange as it sounds - lie about being vaccinated. But, regardless, I have a doctor now. There were no more excuses. It's been over a year since I've seen a doctor and I suffer chronic pain in my head, stomach, lungs, and where the sun don't shine. But, it was COVID times. You can't see your doctor during COVID TIMES! Needless to say, that first visit was a whirlwind of complaints. Mostly from me, but my doctor confused me for a different patient right when he walked in the room. My lizard brain was like, "Call me whatever you want as long as you fix me." When I realized there was no joke, I corrected him. There's nothing like hearing your new doctor

May 3, 2021 - May 9, 2021 Hello readers. This week was Katie's birthday. I attempted to celebrate everyday from May 1st until her birthday with a gift-a-day. I started off with the big gift of roller skates. I got a pair for her, for our friend, and for myself. I explained it as: I got you a roller squad for your birthday. It was cheesy, but I didn't care. Have you ever seen that Chet Faker music video for his song, " Gold ?" Well, the video showcases the talents of Candice Heiden , April Corley, and Appelusa Fleming as they skate in real-time down a highway. It is amazing! And it is the reason why we now have roller skates in our house. We've been falling down left and right, but each day that we try, we gain more confidence. The next gift was a new bullet journal with a modified pen, in hopes she would write more reviews for me. I have to say, she went above and beyond this week. Not only did she complete the entries on her birthday movies, but she also wrote

April 26, 2021 - May 2, 2021 Hello readers. It's May. It's one of my favorite times of the year with the exception of Halloween month. May is my wife's birthday. I get to lavish her with gifts which is exciting. But more important, instead of us curating our films together, we watch anything of her choosing. It feels good to sit back and enjoy. We normally come up with all our lists together such as our Winter Semester list, Oscar Death Race list, 31 Days Of Horror, Valentines, or our Creepy Christmas list. The absolute cherry on top is I don't have to write about them. She's going to do the writing. As these films are her favorites or what she's in the mood for, she's calling all the shots.  In reading that, why do I always cringe with the statement, 'my wife?' It sounds like ownership and if anyone knew our relationship, they would know that nothing is further from the truth. My partner sounds better because you lose the weight of the term wife
